Illinois lawmakers have advanced House Bill 3637, a significant measure aimed at safeguarding access to reproductive health medications. Led by State Senator Karina Villa, the legislation would preserve the availability of drugs like mifepristone even if federal approval is withdrawn, provided their safety is supported by peer-reviewed studies and World Health Organization recommendations. The bill also protects Illinois health care providers from state-level disciplinary action when dispensing reproductive care deemed legal in the state, regardless of a patient’s residency. Senator Villa emphasized Illinois’s commitment to remaining a haven for reproductive rights amid tightening federal restrictions. The bill has passed the Senate.
“The science is clear – medication abortion is safe and effective with a record backed by over two decades of clinical use,” said Villa (D-West Chicago). “The federal administration’s coordinated effort to restrict access to abortion is an attack on women’s freedom and autonomy.”
“In Illinois, we will do everything we can to protect our people from federal actions that threaten their rights,” said Villa. “Illinois will remain a safe haven where people have the right to choose and are empowered to make their own decisions regarding their health.”
