Pharmacists across Illinois can now provide PrEP, a medication proven to prevent HIV, without patients needing a doctor’s prescription. The Illinois Department of Public Health announced this standing order to make PrEP more accessible, particularly in Black and Hispanic communities, which have been disproportionately affected by HIV. Advocates say this change will reduce barriers and encourage more people at risk to seek protection. State officials emphasize that this step is part of a broader strategy to eliminate new HIV transmissions in Illinois by 2030. Pharmacies are preparing for increased demand, and staff are receiving training to support this initiative.
“IDPH continues to value the leadership of Governor JB Pritzker and our tremendous partnerships across Illinois all striving to help our State get to zero,” said Director Vohra. “IDPH is very proud of our PrEP4IL program and the impact it is making to reduce HIV rates. This standing order now takes our efforts even further, opening additional doors of access so more individuals and communities can have the opportunity to take this preventative treatment and dramatically reduce their risk of acquiring HIV.”
