Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services are shining a spotlight on Adoption Awareness Month. Over the past ten years, more than 20,000 children have found permanent homes across Illinois. This month and next, families statewide will participate in special ceremonies to finalize new adoptions. Officials emphasize the ongoing commitment to supporting children and families throughout the adoption process. By celebrating these milestones, the state hopes to encourage more families to consider adoption and help every child find a loving and lasting home. DCFS remains dedicated to fostering permanent family connections for Illinois youth.
“Every child deserves a home where they feel loved, supported and safe,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “The families who choose adoption exemplify the very best of Illinois — compassion, resilience and a belief in the power of community. I’m deeply grateful to every parent who opens their heart and home to a child in need of a loving family, and to the dedicated professionals at DCFS who work tirelessly to make those family connections possible.”
“Adoption transforms lives — both for children and for the families who welcome them,” said Illinois DCFS Director Heidi E. Mueller. “When parents open their homes, they do more than provide shelter — they offer safety, trust and unconditional care that every child deserves. In return, their lives and homes are made immeasurably richer. Illinois DCFS remains committed to our vision that every child and youth can grow and thrive in a family, and our adoptive parents embody that commitment every day.”
Last year, 2,492 children in Illinois found permanent families through adoption, marking a significant step toward stability and hope for youth in care. Currently, 2,443 children still await adoption as their permanency goal. Those interested in meeting some of these children can explore the Heart Gallery of Illinois online, which showcases personal stories and portraits. To learn more about the adoption process or how to become a foster or adoptive parent, the Department of Children and Family Services provides resources and guidance on its website, dcfs.illinois.gov. Each new family means a brighter future for a child in need.
