Illinois Congressman Eric Sorensen has backed new bipartisan legislation aimed at boosting federal support for small and midsize police departments nationwide. The Invest to Protect Act would provide increased funding to help local agencies recruit, train, and retain officers during a period when many struggle with staffing shortages and limited resources. Sorensen emphasized the importance of ensuring officers have what they need to protect communities. The proposed measure has won praise from local law enforcement officials, who say the additional aid could help departments bridge budget gaps, invest in training, and enhance overall public safety in neighborhoods across Illinois and beyond.
“We need to make sure our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to serve our communities have the support they need to do their jobs,” said Congressman Sorensen. “This bipartisan legislation will give local police departments across the country a significant boost in funding to recruit, train, and retain officers during a time when many departments are struggling to fill their ranks.”
“At a time when law enforcement needs critical funding, the Invest to Protect Act will undeniably help departments across not only Illinois but our entire country bridge budgetary shortfalls in critical areas such as recruitment and training,” said Rock Island County Sheriff Darren Hart. “I applaud Congressman Sorensen for his continued efforts in the support our men and women in uniform.”
Congressman Eric Sorensen continues efforts to support law enforcement agencies across Illinois’ 17th district. After meeting with local officers, Sorensen recognized challenges many departments face, including limited budgets and outdated equipment. Responding to these concerns, he secured $200,000 last year to enhance mental health and wellness services for police in Winnebago County. More recently, Sorensen announced $750,000 in federal funding for the Town of Normal, allowing them to hire six additional law enforcement officers. The goal is to strengthen community policing and boost crime prevention, ensuring neighborhoods across the district are better protected and supported.
