The Illinois Department of Transportation is initiating a significant project on Interstate 80 in Henry County, set to begin on March 17, 2025. Weather conditions permitting, the construction will cover a 5.7-mile stretch from the Rock River to south of U.S. 6. The $24.5 million project involves extensive bridge work, including deck replacements and repairs, with lane shifts and closings for westbound traffic initially. To accommodate the project, traffic will be rerouted to the eastbound lanes in a head-to-head configuration with the Colona interchange (Exit 7) closed for westbound traffic. Phase one wraps up in November 2025, pausing for winter, and resumes until the estimated completion by November 2026. Traffic will be rerouted into the westbound lanes in a head-to-head configuration during phase 2 of the project.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. To avoid the work area, when feasible, the use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
