Illinois residents are being warned about a new wave of scam text messages targeting drivers. According to Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, these fraudulent texts claim recipients owe money for traffic violations or tolls, often threatening suspension of vehicle registration or driving privileges. The messages are designed to appear authentic but are actually phishing attempts aimed at stealing personal information and funds. Officials remind the public that the Secretary of State’s office never texts about license or registration issues. Anyone receiving such messages should report them to the Federal Trade Commission to help prevent further scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
“Phishing scams continue to be a persistent threat, especially during the holiday season, with criminals repeatedly attempting to steal Illinoisans’ personal information and hard-earned money,” Giannoulias said. “These messages are designed to look legitimate, which is why it’s important for residents to remember that our office will never contact them by text about license or registration issues. Ignoring and reporting these scams helps protect everyone.”
