Illinois is set to enhance convenience and security for its residents by introducing driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet. Announced by Secretary Alexi Giannoulias, this initiative, enabled by recent legislation, aims for a launch by year’s end. Illinoisans will be able to add their IDs to their iPhone or Apple Watch, allowing them to present their identification seamlessly in person or through apps. This digital option will coexist with traditional physical cards, offering a choice rather than replacing the existing method. Residents interested in receiving updates on this digital advancement can sign up at the Secretary of State’s webpage. This move places Illinois alongside ten other regions adopting similar technologies, promising enhanced privacy and security features for users. “We’re excited to have kickstarted our work with Apple – a company that shares our commitment to data security – to provide IDs in Apple Wallet that will offer convenience and privacy for Illinoisans,” said Giannoulias, whose office pushed for the legislation enabling the development of mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs in Illinois. “This is the first component of a multi-faceted approach to deliver a state-of-the-art mobile driver’s license and state ID program that leverages best-in-class technology for residents.”
