The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is allocating seven million dollars to boost energy resilience for publicly owned wastewater treatment plants. Through the Resilient Energy for Wastewater Infrastructure Grant Program, communities can apply for funding to assess vulnerabilities and install solar-plus-battery storage systems. Award amounts range from $200,000 to $2 million, with matching requirements based on location and population size. Projects will be evaluated on feasibility, resiliency efforts, and benefits to environmental justice communities. The grant aims to address threats from severe weather, outdated infrastructure, and cybersecurity risks. Applications are open until April 30, 2026, on the Illinois EPA Office of Energy’s website or by calling 217-785-8841.
“Resilient wastewater infrastructure is essential for protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring community stability.” said Illinois EPA Acting Director James Jennings. “The REWI Grant Program enhances system reliability by directly addressing emerging risks from severe weather, aging infrastructure, and cyber threats.”
