Illinois families grappling with rising energy costs now have access to expanded utility support through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. Applications for this aid opened today and will remain available until August 15, 2026, or until funding runs out. Eligible households may benefit from reduced monthly gas bills through a special discount rate if they receive an annual LIHEAP payment, and $240 million in aid is set aside for natural gas, propane, electric, and furnace expenses. Priority is given to seniors, households with young children, and those facing imminent disconnection.
“As temperatures begin to drop, my administration is committed to supporting Illinois families with vital utility support for households across the state,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “With energy costs on the rise, we’re focused on easing the burden for Illinoisans. Vital state investments have made this program possible, and I highly encourage all eligible families to apply.”
“Every family—regardless of where you live or how much you make—deserves to be warm at home in the winter,” said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. “As heat and energy costs rise, Governor Pritzker and I are working hard to make sure all those in need can keep their families safe during the cold winter months. I encourage all eligible families to apply for support.”
Illinois is continuing its commitment to help low-income families manage energy costs through several supportive programs this year. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, remains a key resource, offering one-time payments sent directly to energy providers on behalf of eligible households. Additional support includes crisis and reconnection aid, plus furnace repair or replacement for qualifying homeowners. The state’s weatherization program also assists by improving energy efficiency in homes. In the previous funding cycle, over 340,000 Illinois families benefited, receiving an average of $686 per household, helping residents stay warm while easing financial burdens.
“As utility costs rise, I encourage eligible families to apply for support through LIHEAP,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “This cost-saving program has helped over 340,000 households per year in the past and will continue to provide critical assistance to Illinois families who need it the most.”
Beginning October 1, 2025, Help Illinois Families will launch an energy bill assistance program to support households struggling with utility costs. Eligible families can apply for a share of $240 million in aid covering natural gas, propane, electricity bills, and furnace support. Applications can be submitted online by visiting the DCEO website or in person through participating local agencies statewide. Assistance is also available by phone at 1-833-711-0374, where help is offered in 30 languages. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden of energy bills for thousands across Illinois, providing crucial support as temperatures fluctuate.
