Illinois recently celebrated the achievements of young activists Ivoryana Neal and Anthony Ray Wright Jr. by awarding them the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, in association with the National Association of Secretaries of State, honored their dedication to community service and civic engagement. Neal’s work focuses on criminal justice reform through education and re-entry support for the formerly incarcerated. Meanwhile, Wright has contributed significantly by developing a Black History curriculum rooted in personal family histories and boosting voter registration among Chicago’s youth. Additionally, Reagan Johnson was acknowledged as the first runner-up for his efforts in providing access to educational extracurricular programs for remote students in southern Illinois.
“It’s wonderful to honor the impact of the late Congressman Lewis by recognizing two incredible young Illinoisans for their significant service to our communities,” Giannoulias said. “Ivoryana and Anthony are truly carrying out the spirit of Congressman Lewis’ legacy.”
This is the second year of Illinois’ participation in the NASS JLYLA program. Competitors must be between 18 and 25, Illinois residents, and have established a record of service and leadership that meets the ethos of Congressman John Lewis’ legacy. Giannoulias will accept nominations for the third annual Illinois John Lewis Youth Leadership Award in Fall 2025.
