Illinois Hospitals Honored for Leadership in Combating Antibiotic Resistance

Nearly 90 hospitals across Illinois are being recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health for leading initiatives to combat antimicrobial resistance. In conjunction with U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week from November 18th to 24th, these hospitals have implemented strategies focusing on responsible antibiotic use to help curb the rise of drug-resistant infections. Governor JB Pritzker has underscored the importance of these efforts by issuing a proclamation and releasing a video message to increase public awareness. Health officials emphasize that coordinated action in hospitals is key to protecting communities from the growing threat of antibiotic resistance, urging continued focus on careful prescribing practices.

“Antibiotics are powerful medicines that fight infections, but they can stop working if we don’t use them correctly,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “When we take antibiotics when they are not needed, germs can learn to fight back, making infections tougher to cure. This week, we’re celebrating nearly 90 Illinois hospitals for leading the way in using antibiotics wisely. When doctors, patients, and families all work together, we can keep these life-saving medicines working for everyone – now and in the future.”
