The Illinois Conservation Foundation, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, has announced a dedicated endowment fund aimed at safeguarding state parks. This initiative promises to bolster park infrastructure, enhance accessibility, and promote ongoing conservation efforts. Notably, donations to the fund are permanently restricted, guaranteeing exclusive support for Illinois parks. Officials emphasize that these contributions will help ensure Illinois’ natural spaces remain protected and improved for years to come. The endowment reflects a lasting commitment to preserving outdoor recreation and wildlife habitats, inviting public support to make a meaningful impact on Illinois’ cherished parklands.

“From our wooded trails and caverns to our beaches and mighty rivers, our state parks are a great source of pride for Illinoisans – and these spaces must be protected,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Thanks to the support from our state partners, this endowment will fund critical infrastructure and conservation efforts to ensure future generations can enjoy the beauty and historical significance of our state parks.”

Set to channel permanent support into infrastructure, accessibility, and conservation, the initiative arrives amid national concerns about dwindling funding for public lands elsewhere. Thanks to state leadership, Illinois parks remain free and well-maintained. Contributions of all sizes are invited, with an opportunity to join the Founders Circle for lasting stewardship. Individuals, businesses, and foundations can help preserve these natural spaces for future generations. More details can be found at ilconservation.org/stateparks.

“We want to protect our parks with action and investment. We believe parks are for the people, not for profit,” said ICF Executive Director Jenny Vaughn. “Some of our most enduring institutions, from libraries to hospitals, have been shaped by the generosity of private citizens. This endowment gives every Illinoisan the chance to do the same for our parks and the natural spaces we love.”

“Access to nature is a right, not a privilege. Our parks are essential to the physical, emotional and economic health of our communities,” said IDNR Director Natalie Finnie. “This endowment reflects Illinois’ commitment to making public lands truly public, for everyone, now and in the future.”
