Illinois Lawmaker Challenges Undocumented Student Aid Expansion

State Representative Regan Deering of Decatur has introduced new legislation targeting Illinois’ recent expansion of financial aid to undocumented students. This move comes shortly after Governor Pritzker signed House Bill 460, which allows all state residents access to student financial support, regardless of immigration status. Deering’s proposal, filed Tuesday, seeks to ensure non-citizens don’t receive greater tuition or aid benefits than U.S. citizens. She criticized the current policy as lacking fairness and accused the governor of prioritizing political ambitions over responsible governance, highlighting escalating costs like taxes and energy bills as significant burdens for Illinois families.
