Illinois lawmakers are considering new legislation aimed at fast-tracking the approval process for small modular nuclear reactors, or SMRs. Senate Bill 2681, introduced by Senate Minority Deputy Leader Sue Rezin, would require state agencies to act on SMR permit applications within 150 days, with just one potential extension for good cause. If agencies fail to respond, the permit would be automatically approved. Supporters say the bill is crucial for meeting growing energy demands and supporting carbon-free power without changing any federal safety rules. The measure now awaits committee assignment in the Illinois Senate.
“Small modular reactors represent one of the most promising solutions to Illinois’ growing energy reliability challenges,” said Senator Rezin. “However, we won’t realize their full potential if critical projects are stuck in endless permitting delays. My legislation ensures state agencies act in a timely manner so we can move forward with safe, clean nuclear energy.”
