Illinois Residents Face Significant Electricity Rate Hikes in June

The Illinois Commerce Commission is alerting residents about upcoming hikes in electricity prices. Starting in June, ComEd customers are projected to pay roughly eleven dollars more each month on their electric bills. Customers of Ameren may see an even steeper increase, with monthly bills expected to rise by nearly forty-five dollars. These changes come as energy market prices fluctuate and suppliers adjust rates. To help those struggling with these increases, the ICC offers tips on managing consumption, searching for financial assistance, and finding more affordable energy options. Households are encouraged to review their plans and seek help if needed.

“Energy affordability is always top of mind at the ICC, and we want ratepayers to be aware of higher summertime rates so they can safely plan to reduce energy usage and improve energy efficiency around their homes,” said Jonathan Feipel, Executive Director for the Illinois Commerce Commission. “Higher energy supply rates are not unique to Illinois. Unfortunately, electric consumers from Louisiana to Minnesota will be paying more for electricity—not due to state policy decisions, but regional supply and demand.”

Consumers can review the following tips to beat the heat and help offset the increased costs this summer:
  1. Contact your utility about programs to reduce energy usage during peak hours.
  2. Install a programmable thermostat to control the temperature overnight.
  3. Schedule regular AC maintenance visits and replace filters regularly.
  4. Close curtains and other window treatments to block the sun.
  5. Use ceiling or box fans to keep cool.
  6. Caulk or weatherstrip around doors and windows to seal any leaks.

Customers can visit the ICC’s Utility Energy Assistance webpage, the Citizens’ Utility Board’s Help CenterAmeren Payment Assistance, and/or ComEd Payment Assistance to learn more about bill assistance options.
