Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is sounding the alarm about a surge in scam texts and phone calls targeting motorists statewide. Fraudsters are impersonating the Secretary of State’s office, threatening residents with penalties over alleged unpaid tolls and demanding money or personal information. Giannoulias has launched a consumer protection campaign titled “Don’t Click. It’s a Trick,” warning the public to never click links or respond to such messages. The legitimate office does not request payments or threaten legal action via text or call. Suspected scam messages should be reported by emailing screenshots to [email protected]. Stay vigilant, and delete suspicious texts immediately.
“Scammers are using every tool they can – texts, phone calls and fake websites – to pressure people into handing over money and personal information,” Giannoulias said. “They want to create fear, confusion and urgency so Illinoisans act before they think. Don’t fall for it. If you get a text or call claiming to be from the DMV and demanding payment or threatening consequences, it’s a scam.”
Officials emphasize that the office only uses text messaging to remind individuals about upcoming DMV appointments. Any message or phone call claiming to address your driver’s license status, vehicle registration problems, or enforcement actions is not legitimate.
