A new bill aimed at protecting student athletes has cleared the Illinois Senate. State Senator Mary Edly-Allen successfully advanced House Bill 2521, which strengthens background checks for sports officials in high school athletics. Currently, only school employees like bus drivers must undergo fingerprint background checks, leaving referees and umpires exempt. Recent reports revealed that individuals banned from Chicago Public Schools—including those with serious criminal backgrounds—were still able to officiate games. If enacted, the bill will require all sports officials statewide to complete fingerprint background checks, aligning their screening with that of other school staff. The measure now awaits further action.
“As an educator, it is of utmost importance to safeguard our children, both in and out of the classroom,” said Edly-Allen (D-Libertyville). “This bill helps ensure all children are safe and guarded while participating in high school athletics.”
