Illinois residents on Medicare are being encouraged to take advantage of free assistance as Open Enrollment gets underway. The Illinois Department on Aging’s Senior Health Insurance Program offers impartial counseling, both in person and online, to help people compare and review their Medicare options. With some drug plan choices and premiums shifting this year, officials say it’s especially important for beneficiaries to look at their current coverage and consider new choices that might save money or provide better benefits. The service is available at no cost, offering unbiased guidance to ensure older adults get the best coverage possible for their needs.

Navigating Medicare options can be overwhelming, but free assistance is available for Illinois residents. To get advice tailored to your needs—and potentially save money—visit a local SHIP site. The Senior Health Insurance Program offers in-person support across the state. For independent comparisons of 2026 coverage plans, Medicare’s Plan Finder online tool is a valuable resource. Alternatively, speak directly to a representative by calling 1-800-MEDICARE. TTY users can dial 877-486-2048. The Medicare Support Hotline operates around the clock, except certain federal holidays, ensuring help is accessible whenever you need it.

“Your health needs can change from year to year, and so do Medicare plan costs and coverage,” said SHIP Director Sandy Leith. “Now’s the time to review your current Medicare coverage to make sure it still meets your needs. To help you make an informed decision, the Senior Health Insurance Program uses trained volunteers to offer trusted, unbiased Medicare counseling to Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers.”

“The right plan for you is the plan that will cover ALL of your current prescription medications,” said SHIP Director Sandy Leith. “Everyone currently on Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan will have received a letter from their current plan detailing changes for 2026. Please read your letters to make sure your plan will still be offering Medicare for 2026. In some instances, you may have to change plans due to a non-renewal. When in doubt, call Medicare to double check.”
