The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the American Lung Association are bringing attention to Radon Action Month with contests aimed at boosting radon awareness among students. Young people across the state are invited to submit posters and videos about the dangers of radon exposure by March 15. Several students from Illinois schools have already received recognition for their impactful messages, helping communities better understand the health risks associated with radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Organizers hope these creative efforts will encourage more families to test their homes and take action to reduce radon levels, protecting their health.
“Radon is an invisible threat that poses a very real danger to our communities. As the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, it’s critical that we continue raising awareness and encouraging proactive testing,” said IEMA-OHS Director Ted Berger. “The creativity and passion we see in these student contests are truly inspiring. When young people take the lead in educating others through their creativity, they help shape a healthier future for generations to come.”
