As students across Illinois gear up for the return to school, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency is highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness as part of family routines. Parents and students are encouraged to plan alternate routes to school and maintain backup communication in case of emergencies. The agency also recommends regular discussions around digital safety. Students facing bullying, mental health challenges, or safety concerns can access confidential support through Safe2HelpIL, available by phone, text, app, or email. Officials hope these measures will keep both students and staff safe throughout the coming school year.
“August is a busy month with students returning to school and college and we encourage preparedness education so that the school year is as smooth and positive as possible,” said Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) Acting Director Theodore (Ted) Berger.
