Three Illinois Valley Community College employees recently explored The Netherlands through a unique professional exchange program. Their visit included time at several Dutch colleges, where they observed firsthand the country’s emphasis on practical, hands-on learning and robust student support systems. The group also gained insight into family life and the deep-rooted culture of community involvement. Sustainability emerged as a key theme, with colleges and communities alike prioritizing eco-friendly practices. The experience aims to inspire new ideas and strengthen global connections, bringing fresh perspectives to Illinois Valley’s own educational approach.
“The Dutch put a lot of time into making sure that all students succeed, supplying professional social workers, classroom aides, mentors and a lot of one-on-one time with students,” said Cook Fesperman, who teaches political science and history and coordinates IVCC’s Study Abroad program. Students as young as 12 choose a career path and actively prepare for it, she said, remembering a 12-year-old she met who was already on his way to becoming a farmer.
“Everyone has the option to build or rebuild their lives with support,” Hardy said. “People help those in need with programs that offer them a boost while moving them toward independence.”
