Illinois Valley Community College is gearing up to celebrate Black History Month with an engaging lineup of events kicking off on February 3. The series features notable speakers, including music historian David ‘DJ’ Lee, who will explore the evolution of hip-hop and rap. Dr. Amira Davis will delve into the Chicago Black Renaissance, while Professor Jeff Fesperman will examine the role of race in baseball. These events aim to educate and inspire, offering the community a chance to reflect on the profound cultural and historical contributions of Black Americans. Admission is free and open to everyone. Dr. Davis is an Illinois Humanities Council Road Scholar, and the Illinois Humanities Council is also a co-sponsor.
The Illinois Valley Community College is hosting a series of events this February to celebrate Black History Month, starting with a Hip Hop/Rap presentation in the Student Life Space on Monday, February 3rd, at noon. On Thursday, February 13th, Dr. Amira Davis will delve into “The Chicago Black Renaissance,” exploring the cultural and social transformations sparked by black migration to the city. Later in the month, on Tuesday, February 25th, IVCC Professor Jeff Fesperman will discuss the history of race and racism in baseball. All events are free and open to the public, with Jacobs Library also showcasing works by black authors throughout the month.
