Illinois Valley Community College is hosting a Day of the Dead altar in the Main Campus and Ottawa Center lobbies, inviting everyone to participate in this meaningful tradition. From September 26th through November 1st, visitors are welcome to add photos, keepsakes, non-perishable foods, sealed drinks, or written memories to honor loved ones who have passed. The altar, adorned with vibrant colors and flowers, reflects centuries-old customs from Mexico, where Día de los Muertos is observed annually. The college encourages families to join in this heartfelt tribute, creating a space for remembrance and community reflection. Organizers hope that the display will provide a space for reflection and connection, highlighting the importance of honoring those who have passed away. Visitors of all backgrounds are welcome to add their tributes and experience the significance of this annual event.

“We’re excited to see everyone, regardless of cultural background, engage in this event, and we hope it will always be an amazing yearly celebration,” said Shannon Slaight, art instructor and one of the organizers.

Items contributed during the recent community event will be available for pickup at the Main Campus and Ottawa Center front desks starting at 1 p.m. on November 3. The gathering was made possible by the combined efforts of the Hispanic Leadership Team, Illinois Valley Visual Arts Club, Project Success Leadership Team, and the International Club. Anyone with inquiries about their contributions can reach out to Sara Escatel at (815) 224-0355 or email [email protected], or contact Shannon Slaight at (815) 224-0351 or [email protected] for more information.
