The annual Walk to End Epilepsy is set for this weekend, June 7, 2025, at City Park, Shelter Number Six, in Iowa City. Organized to support epilepsy research, the event invites participants to walk, donate, or simply cheer on the efforts. Proceeds benefit crucial projects and raise awareness about epilepsy, a condition affecting nearly 3.5 million Americans. Local residents are encouraged to sign up online and join the UI Epilepsy Striders Adult Epilepsy Team, with all ages welcome to participate. Organizers hope the walk not only brings in much-needed funds but also helps reduce stigma and promotes understanding within the community.

One area resident is attending the Walk to End Epilepsy in Iowa City on Saturday and shared her story with us. Paula Hulslander has suffered from epilepsy for 30 years. For years, she tried to hide her disability but realized that she doesn’t need to hide it, and she hopes to educate people about exactly what epilepsy is and how to help someone having a seizure. Paula said she had been ashamed of having seizures. Paula said, “Then, I realized that it’s my life. It’s not going anywhere.” Paula said that she found that a lot of people know very little about epilepsy. She said, “There are also a lot of other disabilities that aren’t talked about either.” Paula is raising money for the Walk to End Epilepsy and invites anyone to join the walk. The walk will also be educational; there will be people at the walk talking about epilepsy and seizures. Paula said, “It’s an honor to talk about this walk. It means a lot to me and a lot to other people.”

Paule said that she understands that Iowa City is too far for some people to drive for a walk. “But I hope that you all can see what a meaningful event this is.” Paula is hoping to get a team together for the walk. If you can help by joining her team or making a donation, send Paula a message on Facebook.

Organizers are focusing on educating participants about how to recognize the signs of a seizure and the appropriate responses to help individuals in need. The walk also serves as a platform to foster greater understanding and support for those living with epilepsy in the community. By attending, individuals can learn how to make a difference while supporting ongoing advocacy and research efforts. Registration details and resources are available through local health organizations leading the event.
