The City of Galesburg has officially appointed Kevin Legate as its new Police Chief. Legate’s career spans more than 25 years in law enforcement, including recent roles as Deputy Chief and Acting Chief. City officials highlighted his leadership skills and deep commitment to both the department and the wider Galesburg community. Legate is expected to focus on strengthening community relationships and advancing public safety initiatives. Residents and local leaders have expressed support and confidence in his ability to lead the department forward. The appointment marks a new chapter for Galesburg’s public safety efforts under Legate’s guidance.
“Chief Legate has done an exceptional job leading the Galesburg Police Department through a challenging transition, solidifying his place as a leader of outstanding character and judgment,” said City Manager Eric Hanson. “Throughout his dedicated career with the Galesburg Police Department, he has earned the confidence of his community and colleagues, and I am certain he will continue to excel in this new role.”
With an impressive career spanning more than two decades, Legate has risen through the ranks of Galesburg law enforcement. After earning a degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University, Legate continued his training with specialized coursework at Northwestern University and the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Starting as a patrol officer in Rock Island, he joined the Galesburg Police Department in 2001, later serving as a MEG Agent with the Peoria Multi-County Narcotic Unit. Returning to Galesburg, Legate has held positions from Investigator to Acting Police Chief, highlighting a strong commitment to public safety and leadership.
