Kewanee 2024 Roadwork Plan Sparked Debate at Council Meeting

SHARE NOW

The City of Kewanee released the map of planned roadwork for 2024, which caused tense interactions at the August 26th city council meeting.  Councilmember Steve Faber didn’t approve the proposed plan for roadwork in Kewanee for 2024. He said the planned work shouldn’t cost $600,000. Viewers on Facebook Live expressed support for Councilmember Faber during the meeting and wanted to see the map. The map was released in the council packet on Friday and the City of Kewanee’s Facebook page today. The City of Kewanee said the 2024 Road Program is “tentatively scheduled to begin in mid-October, with completion expected before Thanksgiving. This year’s improvements will focus on roads located in the southeast quadrant of the city.”

The streets lined in orange are the roads being sand-sealed this year. The City of Kewanee said the roads will receive a hot mix asphalt sand seal surface, a thin layer of asphalt, followed by sand.  “This process seals small cracks, prevents water from penetrating the road surface, and provides additional skid resistance. It is a cost-effective solution for maintaining smooth and durable roadways.”

Residents will be notified of any potential impacts to parking at the school, trash and recycling collection, and temporary road closures that may affect access to homes. “We appreciate your cooperation during this time and encourage you to reach out with any concerns.”

Travelers should anticipate road closures and detours in the southeast quadrant of Kewanee during construction. The City of Kewanee asks that travelers follow posted signs and choose alternate routes when possible. The city will provide updates during construction. If you have questions or concerns, contact Kewanee City Hall at 309-852-2611.
