Kewanee Man Arrested for Armed Robbery Thursday Afternoon

A Kewanee man was arrested for the Armed Robbery behind Cenex that we told you about Thursday evening. According to a release from the Kewanee Police Department, Nicklaus Smith, 23, was arrested following an investigation into an individual being robbed at gunpoint behind Cenex at EZT Gaming on February 1, 2024.  Around 2 PM, Kewanee Police received a 911 call from an individual reporting that he was forced by a male subject  in a silver Chevy Silverado to withdraw money from his ATM card.  The male subject was brandishing a silver revolver according to the release.

Officers quickly arrived on scene and located the pickup truck described by the caller.  Officers detained Nicklaus Smith without incident and located a loaded silver revolver inside the vehicle.  Following an investigation, Smith was formally arrested and transported to the Kewanee Police Department and ultimately transported to the Henry County Jail.

Smith is charged with Armed Violence (Class X Felony), Aggravated Robbery (Class 2 Felony), Intimidation/Physical Harm (Class 3 Felony), Possession of Meth <5 grams (Class 3 Felony), Unlawful Use of A Weapon (Class 4 Felony), Aggravated Assault/Public Place (Class A Misdemeanor), and Aggravated Assault/Deadly Weapon (Class A Misdemeanor).

Smith has  a Preliminary Hearing scheduled for February 12, 2024, at 9 AM.  Nicklaus Smith will remain in custody until trial.

Class X felony: Mandatory sentence of 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections

Class 2 felony: Sentencing range of 3-7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections

Class 3 felony: Sentencing range of 2-5 years in the Department of Corrections

Class 4 felony: Sentencing range of 1-3 years in the Department of Corrections

Class A Misdemeanor – Up to 364 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $2500

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
