A Kewanee man has been charged with Trespassing and Criminal Damage to Property following a break-in at a downtown Kewanee business on Saturday. The owners of the business posted photos and security footage of a male subject walking around inside their building. Armando Rosas posted a picture of the bathroom with a hole in the wall where the suspect is believed to have exited the building. The Kewanee Police Department was dispatched to the 200 block of West 2nd Street for a possible burglary in progress around 4:30 PM on December 2, 2023. Officers were unable to locate a suspect at the time of their arrival.  Nothing was reported stolen but the business owner reported property damage. Officers reviewed surveillance footage from the targeted business and neighboring businesses, plus surveillance footage shared on social media by the business owners, and identified the suspect as William Withrow.

On December 4, 2023, the Kewanee Police Department arrested William Withrow,58, and charged him with Criminal Trespass to Real Property (Class B Misdemeanor) and Criminal Damage to Property (Class A Misdemeanor). He was subsequently released with a notice to appear with a First Appearance scheduled for January 8, 2024.

A Class A Misdemeanor carries a potential maximum sentence of 364 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
