Kewanee Man Found Guilty at Bench Trial for One Case will Represent Himself on Remaining Cases

A Kewanee man was granted the right to represent himself after being found fit to stand trial and requesting to represent himself. Joshua Sloan was found guilty of two counts of resisting and attempting to disarm an officer by Judge Colby Hathaway during a bench trial on December 3, 2024. He was found not guilty of public indecency. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 4, 2025, at 9 AM. A final pretrial was scheduled for his other pending cases on December 16th. Sloan said he wants to defend himself at his final pretrial on December 16th. He also requested to be released from custody, to which the state objected, and the motion for release was denied. The Court ruled that Joshua Sloan can represent himself on the conviction and pending cases. Attorney Sosalla was allowed to withdraw as counsel. The final pretrial was continued to January 21, 2025, at 9 AM.

On November 14, 2023, Sloan attempted to disarm a Kewanee Police Officer while the officer was attempting to arrest him, Resisting a Peace Officer with Injury by striking the taser of a Kewanee Police Office, causing the taser probe to get stuck in the officer’s finger, Public Indecency for thrusting his hips while naked on his outside porch while neighbors and/or children were present, Resisting a Peace Officer for pulling his arms away from a Kewanee Police Officer during an arrest for case 2023CF358.

Joshua Sloan is charged with Attempting to Disarm (Class 2 Felony), Resisting with Injury (Class 4 Felony), Public Indecency (Class A Misdemeanor), and Resisting a Peace Officer (Class A Misdemeanor) for case 2023CF358. Sloan is charged with Aggravated Battery of a Nurse (Class 3 Felony)  for case 2024CF20. Sloan is charged with Resisting Correctional Office (Class 4 Felony), Attempt to Disarm Correctional Officer (Class 2 Felony), and five counts of Obstructing (Class A Misdemeanor) for case 2024CF23. Sloan is charged with Aggravated Assault of a Correctional Officer (Class 4 Felony) and Aggravated Assault/Public Place (Class A Misdemeanor) for case 2024CF64.
