A Kewanee man received probation and time served in the Henry County Jail for an altercation on January 3, 2024, where he suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand. Ivan Schinkey pleaded guilty in an open plea to Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Handgun by a person under 21 years old on April 29, 2024. Ivan Schinkey was sentenced on June 14th to 30 months of probation, 180 days in the Henry County Jail, with day-for-day credit and credit for time served, he is not allowed to possess any weapons, not allowed to leave the state without permission, ordered to reside with his mother, and to have no contact with the victims. Schinkey was released following his sentencing. The remaining counts were dismissed per the open plea agreement.
According to a release from the Kewanee Police Department, Kewanee Police made five arrests following a disturbance that happened around midnight Wednesday morning. Kewanee Police responded to reports of a group arguing and a gunshot on January 3, 2024, around 12:16 AM in the 500 block of East 7th Street. According to scanner traffic, a Henry County Sheriff’s Office Deputy requested EMS after finding a subject with a gunshot wound. Ivan L. Schinkey was identified as the individual with a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound to the hand, he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Schinkey was originally charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony), Reckless Discharge of a Firearm (Class 4 Felony), Unlawful Possession of a Handgun (Class 4 Felony), Possession of a Firearm without a valid FOID (Class A Misdemeanor), and Criminal Trespass to Railroad Property (Class C Misdemeanor).
