Kewanee Man Identified in Fatal Viaduct Crash on September 30th

Henry County Coroner Melissa Watkins identified the driver who died after hitting the wall of the North East Street viaduct on September 30, 2025. Alec E. Dillender of Kewanee was pronounced deceased at the scene late Tuesday night by the Henry County Coroner’s Office. Alec Dillender is a Kewanee native and 2018 graduate of Kewanee High School. Alec continued his studies at MTI in Moline before joining Wal-Mart’s Tire, Lube Express team. Remembered for his creativity, Alec filled his days with music, poetry, video games, and tranquil moments fishing. His family care shone brightest when supporting his brother Austin’s move to Arizona. Alec’s quick wit and generous spirit touched all who met him. Service details will be announced. According to his obituary, “Alec worked at Wal-Mart in the Tire, Lube Express. Alec’s zest for life and his unwavering support for his family and friends will be deeply missed. Alec had a passion for the arts, finding solace and expression in video games and music. Alec’s poetic soul was evident in his writing of poems. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Alec was known for his quick wit and his talent for making people laugh. Alec also found solace in the tranquility of nature, often spending his time fishing. He loved his dogs; they will miss his presence. In a selfless act of brotherhood, when Austin moved to Arizona for college, Alec did not hesitate to accompany him. His decision to relocate was a testament to his generous spirit and his commitment to supporting those he cared about. Alec’s presence was a source of strength and encouragement for Austin during this significant life transition. Alec’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and creativity. Though he has left this world, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Alec’s memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.”

The Kewanee Police Department received a request to check the welfare of a male subject driving a vehicle on September 30, 2025, around 8:45 PM. Officers attempted two traffic stops on the vehicle, but the driver fled from officers. The vehicle crashed into the East Street viaduct after officers lost sight of the vehicle and terminated the pursuit. The vehicle came to rest in the trees along the railroad tracks. Hodge’s Towing lifted the vehicle out of the trees so that the Kewanee Police and the Henry County Coroner could process it.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kewanee Police Department and the Henry County Coroner’s Office.
