The Kewanee Police Department is ramping up patrols this Halloween season, targeting impaired driving on local roads. Officers will be on the lookout for drivers under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or any other impairing substances. Motorists are urged to drive sober, always wear seat belts, and adhere to all traffic regulations. Police emphasize that DUI laws extend beyond alcohol to include drugs and over-the-counter medications that may affect motor skills. These efforts are part of a statewide safety initiative funded by grants, designed to keep the community safe and reduce preventable accidents during Halloween festivities.
“Alcohol and cannabis both impair your ability to drive safely,” said Chief Kijanowski. “It’s essential to plan how you’ll get home before heading out, whether you’ve been drinking or using any substance. And always remember to buckle up. Every trip, every time. Safe decisions behind the wheel protect not just you, but everyone sharing the road.”
The Kewanee Police Department offers the following safety tips this Halloween:
- Plan your ride home before attending any party.
- Designate a sober driver, use public transportation, or call a ride-share service, a sober friend, or a family member.
- Remember that walking while impaired can also be dangerous — bring a sober friend to help you get home safely.
- Always wear your seat belt; it’s your best defense against impaired drivers and crashes.
- Use local sober-ride programs if available.
- If you see an impaired driver, contact law enforcement immediately when it’s safe to do so.
- If someone you know is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help them find a safe ride.
Law enforcement across Illinois is ramping up patrols as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI.” campaigns. These initiatives are funded by federal highway safety grants administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, with active support from the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies. The campaigns fall under IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” initiative, highlighting the serious consequences of impaired driving. Authorities urge drivers to make safe choices, reminding the public that getting behind the wheel under the influence can result in severe legal and personal consequences for everyone on the road.
