The Kewanee Police Department is ramping up efforts to keep local roads safe as part of a traffic safety campaign running through July 7, 2025. Officers are targeting impaired and unbuckled drivers, working in conjunction with the Illinois State Police and law enforcement agencies throughout the state. This initiative is supported by federal traffic safety grants and highlights the dangers of driving under the influence, as well as the lifesaving benefits of seatbelts. Authorities urge all motorists to buckle up and drive sober, underscoring that these simple actions can significantly reduce injuries and fatalities on Illinois roadways this summer.

“We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” said Chief Stephen Kijanowski. “It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink or use cannabis or other impairing substances. Our officers will be working diligently to keep impaired drivers off the road and ensure everyone is buckled up.”

Illinois is ramping up efforts to keep roads safe with a trio of federally funded traffic safety campaigns: “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI,” and “Click It or Ticket.” These high-visibility enforcement initiatives, overseen by the Illinois Department of Transportation, work hand in hand with IDOT’s media campaign, “It’s Not a Game.” This messaging focuses on the real-life consequences of impaired and unsafe driving. Officials say these combined efforts are designed to reduce crashes and save lives, especially as travel increases during the summer months. Motorists are urged to buckle up and drive responsibly.
