This Thanksgiving, the Kewanee Police Department, in collaboration with the Illinois State Police, is intensifying its efforts to keep the roads safe. From November 22nd to December 2nd, officers will enforce the “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns. Chief Kijanowski emphasizes the importance of seatbelts and sober driving during the holiday season when traffic peaks, increasing the risk of accidents. While Illinois boasts a high seatbelt usage rate of 92.4%, authorities are pushing for better adherence. They advise planning a sober ride home in advance and utilizing services like taxis or rideshares to ensure a safe and joyful holiday. For assistance with car seat safety, Kewanee PD offers checks by appointment.
“Thanksgiving means more vehicles on the road and an increased risk of crashes,” said Chief Kijanowski. “No matter how long or short your drive, remember to buckle up and ensure that children are correctly secured in a safe seat. By buckling up and planning for a sober ride home, you help everyone enjoy a safe and happy holiday.
If your celebrations include alcohol or other impairing substances, please remember:
•Plan for a sober ride home before you go out.
•Call a taxi, take mass transit, or ask a family member to get you home safely.
•Use your favorite ride-share service, such as Uber or Lyft, or opt for public transportation.
