Retail sales in Kewanee surged to just over $72 million in the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant 15% rise from last year’s $62 million. Notable gains were recorded in the food, apparel, and building materials sectors, indicating strong consumer demand in these areas. Sales of general merchandise held steady, reflecting consistent performance. However, there were downturns in furniture and automotive sales, which are attributed in part to several recent store closures. Across Henry County, sales climbed by nearly 18%, while downstate figures statewide also reflected a healthy 15% boost. With the current momentum, local businesses are optimistic about sustaining this upward trend through the remainder of 2025, aiming for a potentially record-setting sales year.
