Kewanee police responded swiftly after reports of a person carrying a “long gun” and knocking on doors near Fairview Homes around 11:40 AM on April 25, 2025. Officers searched the area, prompting Kewanee High School and Belle Alexander Elementary to enter lockdown as a precaution. Authorities quickly located the individual and discovered the weapon in question was a BB gun, not a firearm. It turns out the person was returning the BB gun home after confiscating it from his child. Police determined there was no criminal intent and no threats were made. Lockdowns were lifted soon after, and officials thanked the community for their vigilance and cooperation.

Kewanee School District Superintendent Rebecca Baney released the following statement regarding the possible gun incident:

“Kewanee Community Unit School District 229 would like to thank the Kewanee Police Department, along with our staff, students, and families, for their swift cooperation during today’s incident involving a report of an individual with a “gun” near Fairview Homes.

At approximately 11:42 a.m., the Kewanee Police Department advised the District to place Kewanee High School and Belle Alexander Elementary School on lockdown as a precautionary measure while they investigated the report. Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of law enforcement, it was determined that there was no active threat to the schools or the community.

Once the situation was fully assessed and resolved, the District was notified, and the lockdowns were lifted.

Today’s incident serves as an important reminder for all families to talk with their children about the importance of gun safety, responsible behavior, and the seriousness of situations involving any item that could be mistaken for a weapon. These conversations help protect the safety and well-being of our entire community.

The District will continue to work closely with local authorities to respond promptly and effectively to any potential concerns. We appreciate your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe.”
