Kewanee High School’s agriculture teacher, Kindra Callahan, has received the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of Illinois’ most prestigious honors for educators. Chosen from more than 470 nominees, Callahan stands among 11 recognized for their outstanding impact on high school students. Known for her inventive hands-on programs, including the well-known “Piggy Party Project,” she connects classroom learning to real-world agricultural experiences. Her efforts have transformed Kewanee’s agriculture curriculum into one of the state’s top programs. The Golden Apple Foundation highlights her as an inspirational figure, helping to prepare and mentor future teachers throughout Illinois. “One of her colleagues even notes that she has single-handedly elevated the school’s agriculture program to one of the very top programs in the state, ensuring students receive both practical experience and industry knowledge that prepares them for future careers.”

“Exceptional teachers ignite curiosity, build confidence, and create pathways to lifelong success for their students,” said Alan Mather, President of The Golden Apple Foundation. “The educators we honor today exemplify teaching at its finest. They blend passion with expertise and innovation with compassion. As they join our community of excellence, these individuals will help us strengthen the teaching profession across Illinois, inspiring and mentoring emerging educators who will shape countless young minds for generations to come.”

Winners each receive a $5,000 cash prize, a spring sabbatical at Northwestern University, and become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators. This community of educators is vital in preparing future teachers through the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs, focused on addressing Illinois’ teacher shortage.
