In Kewanee, the future of local trailer parks hangs in the balance as they remain under receivership, a situation that has been ongoing since April 2024. Concerns have deepened with recent objections filed by City Attorney Zachary Lessard, pointing to numerous code violations and substantial unpaid city water bills of over $300,000. These issues indicate a broader struggle to maintain living standards and meet municipal requirements. The next court hearing is set for February 13th, which is expected to determine the next steps toward rehabilitation or possible closures and allow the Shapiro Group time to consult with counsel. These developments raise critical questions about the management and sustainability of such communities. Keith Edwards said at a recent council meeting that he is not pleased with the cleanup efforts by the contractor hired to clean up the trailer parks. He said he had reached out to the Shapiro Group to discuss the issues.
Below is the letter from the January 27th Kewanee City Council Meeting Packet.
