The Kewanee Veterans Council is observing “Poppy Days” from May 16th through 18th, honoring the enduring legacy of veterans. The symbolic red poppy, recognized nationwide since 1922, is being distributed by local youth representatives: Charlie and Preston Paxton for VFW Post 8078, alongside Gavin and Chloe Cernovich for American Legion Post 31. Community members can find veterans and volunteers outside local businesses collecting donations for veterans’ relief efforts. The annual tradition, especially significant ahead of Memorial Day, exemplifies the commitment to honor those who served by supporting and remembering both the fallen and the living within Kewanee.

This year, Charlie Paxton, a freshman at Kewanee High, and her brother Preston, a 6th grader at Visitation Catholic, represent Post 8078. Their parents are Damien and Ashley Paxton. Their father, Damien Paxton, a proud veteran, will serve as Quartermaster. Representing Post 31 are Gavin and Chloe Cernovich, 6th and 4th graders at Central School. Their parents are Adam and Angie Cernovich. Their father, Commander Adam Cernovich, currently directs auxiliary duties for the U.S. Coast Guard. Every donation supports vital veterans’ relief programs, honoring the tradition of “Honoring the Dead by Helping the Living.”
