Marcy Oglesby has been convicted of First Degree Murder in the death of retired Maquon Police Chief Richard “Rick the Cop” Young, whose remains were discovered on October 7, 2022. The verdict, delivered by Judge Andrew Doyle following a bench trial, also includes convictions for Attempted First Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery by Administering a Dangerous Substance.  The guilty came after a multi-day bench trial that included testimony from 26 witnesses and expert analysis in several forensic fields. Evidence showed Oglesby poisoned Young over several months in 2021 and concealed his body in a storage unit across from their home. Young’s remains were not discovered until nearly a year later. Sentencing is set for September 3, 2025, bringing a measure of closure to those who knew and respected Chief Young.

Knox County State’s Attorney Ashley M. Worby emphasized that this verdict delivers long-awaited justice for Young’s family, friends, and the Maquon community, who mourn his enduring legacy.

According to the release from Knox County State’s Attorney Worby, “Rick Young, affectionately known in his community as “Rick the Cop,” served as Maquon’s police chief. A devoted public servant, Rick’s compassion extended beyond his badge. Whether it was a neighbor in need, a family member, or a stray animal, Rick was always willing to lend a hand. Known for his skill in repairing and building, he approached every task with precision and pride.”

“After years of patience and persistence, Rick, and his family and friends finally have justice,” said State’s Attorney Worby. “This guilty finding holds the defendant accountable for an unthinkable betrayal and loss.”
