Lake Storey in Galesburg is reopening on March 2, 2024, for water access after remediation followed a diesel leak from a nearby property. The lake was closed as a precaution, and remediation efforts were undertaken by the Illinois Department of Central Management Services. Fire Chief Randy Hovind commended the contractor’s work and confirmed remediation will continue in the surrounding area as needed.
“We are pleased to be able to reopen Lake Storey to water access,” said Fire Chief Randy Hovind. “While remediation cannot guarantee that 100% of the diesel fuel that entered the lake has been removed, the contractor has done a tremendous job, and will remain nearby remediating neighboring property if any additional needs arise.”
