Lawmakers Urge Governor to Support Police After Tensions Escalate at Broadview ICE Facility Protests

Tensions escalated at the Broadview ICE facility today as violent protests resulted in injuries to law enforcement officers. State Representatives John Cabello, Patrick Sheehan, and Dennis Tipsword, all with law enforcement backgrounds, released a statement criticizing what they call “reckless rhetoric” from Governor Pritzker, blaming it for fueling the confrontations. The representatives are urging the governor to deploy additional police resources and to publicly support officers on the ground. Emphasizing the difference between peaceful protest and violence, they are calling for strong leadership and increased protection for law enforcement as order is restored in Broadview.

“We are praying for the law enforcement officers who were injured during the chaos unfolding in Broadview today. These officers showed up to keep everyone safe, but instead found themselves under attack.

“Unfortunately, protestors are again answering Governor Pritzker’s call to be ‘street fighters’ and today’s violent actions in Broadview are the direct result of his reckless rhetoric that fuels confrontation. While state, county, and local officers are being assaulted in the line of duty, the Governor remains silent.

“Governor Pritzker must immediately deploy additional law enforcement resources to Broadview to restore order, protect officers on the ground, and prevent further injuries. Illinois’ law enforcement community deserves leadership that stands with them, not political posturing. Instead of running for President, the Governor should be focused on backing law enforcement and condemning the violence happening in his own backyard.

“Every American has the right to peacefully protest. However, they do not have the right to assault law enforcement officers.”
