MACOMB, IL – In a matchup against Big Ten opponent Illinois, Western Illinois baseball suffered a tough defeat on Tuesday night, falling to the Fighting Illini 12-1, dropping their overall record to 8-28.

Offensively, Western Illinois struggled to find momentum, securing only four hits as a team throughout the game. Despite their efforts, they faced difficulty in generating consistent scoring opportunities. However, senior Kyle Rosenfeld showcased his defensive skills, contributing a strikeout in the first inning and initiating a crucial double play in the second, setting a strong defensive tone for the team.

The Illini gained an early lead in the third inning with a solo home run, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Western Illinois attempted to mount a comeback in the second inning with Cesar Franco’s leadoff double, but they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

The game took a decisive turn in the fifth inning when Illinois broke it open with a seven-run surge, extending their lead to 8-0. They further widened the gap in the sixth inning, adding four more runs to solidify their dominance at 12-0.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Western Illinois showed resilience in the final innings, managing to score a lone run. Trevor Leon ignited a late rally with a single, followed by Brock Lummus reaching base on an error. Justin Jang loaded the bases, setting the stage for Max Slavens to drive in the sole RBI with a groundout to first base.

Adam Juran, Cesar Franco, Trevor Leon, and Brock Lummus contributed to Western Illinois’ offensive efforts, with Franco’s double being the only extra-base hit. On the pitching front, the team combined for seven strikeouts, led by Rosenfeld with two strikeouts.

Looking ahead, Western Illinois aims to bounce back in a weekend road series against Lindenwood, a crucial OVC series that pitches off on Friday.
