Lieutenant Justin Reed achieved a career goal when he was promoted to Lieutenant in May of 2023.  The Kewanee Police Department announced that Lieutenant Reed graduated from the Northwestern School of Police Staff & Command (SPSC).  Lieutenant Reed told RegionalMediaNews that achieving the rank of Lieutenant has been his goal since his promotion to Sergeant in 2016.  Lieutenant Reed said “I am excited to have graduated and am ready to get back to work and apply what I have learned”.  Lieutenant Reed joined the Kewanee Police Department in July of 2007 and has demonstrated a commitment to public safety throughout his career.  Throughout his career, Lieutenant Reed has served in Patrol, Street Crimes, the Black Hawk Area Task Force and as an evidence custodian.  His diverse experiences have helped him face the many challenges on law enforcement professionals.  Lieutenant Reed also has a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Illinois University, which further emphasizes his dedication to academic achievement to prepare him for success in senior command positions within law enforcement.

Chief Stephen Kijanowski said “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Lieutenant Justin Reed on this remarkable achievement.”  “Lieutenant Reed’s journey from patrol officer to Lieutenant is testament to his dedication, hard work, and leadership qualities.  We are proud to have him as a member of the City of Kewanee family.”

Lieutenant Reed said he is in charge of the Patrol Division and works with the four Sergeants to ensure patrol runs efficiently and effectively.  He said he is still learning and is looking forward to determining what works and where he can make improvements.  “My plans for the future are to apply concepts I learned at Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command, work with the Sergeants to make sure the Kewanee Police Department continues to be here for the needs of the citizens of Kewanee and to have a little fun in the meantime.”
