Macomb Man Charged with Shooting Macomb Police Officers Serving Warrant

A Macomb man is in custody after a 20 hours standoff with police for shooting and injuring two Macomb Police Officers. Around 2:10 PM, Shaiking M. Mathis, 38, peacefully surrendered to officers after 20 hours of “extensive negotiations.” Shaiking M. Mathis Was transported from the residence in the 300 block of North Normal Street to the McDonough County Jail without incident. Mathis has been charged with four counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Additional charges are pending.

At approximately 6:44PM on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, officers from the Macomb Police Department attempted to serve a search warrant in the 300 block of North Normal Street. After knocking and announcing their presence multiple times, officers made entry into the residence and were immediately met with gunfire. Two Macomb police officers were shot by a suspect in the residence. Both officers were transported to area hospitals and then transferred to a trauma center in Peoria. Both officers are recovering at home, and are expected to make a full recovery.

The professionalism and bravery they displayed during this entire incident and their dedication to the citizens of Macomb is to be commended.”

A use of force investigation is being conducted by the Illinois State Police and all questions related to the investigation should be directed to them.
