MACOMB, IL – McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout issued a press release on Wednesday afternoon, stating his position regarding the recently passed Illinois House Bill 5471, also known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act.

In the release, Petitgout affirms that he believes HB 5471 to be a clear violation of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, citing the right to keep and bear arms for defense of life, liberty, and property as an inalienable right by the people.

Petitgout goes on to announce that he has made the decision that as neither he nor his office will be checking to ensure that lawful gun owners register their weapons with the State of Illinois, nor will they be arresting or housing law-abiding individuals that have been charged solely with non-compliance of this Act.
