MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Western Illinois University alumnus John Elliott has established two $12,000 scholarships in loving memory of his wife who recently passed away. The Joann Amos Elliott Memorial Scholarships will be available for two students from Monmouth-Roseville High School who have applied and been accepted to attend Western Illinois University for the 2023-24 academic school year. The scholarships will be payable over a four-year period at $3,000 per year.
Joann attended Monmouth High School where she was an outstanding student, splendid athlete and cheerleader. After high school, Joann enrolled at Western Illinois University where she met the love of her life, John. They married April 10, 1964 in Macomb. John participated in track and field at Western and was a member of Alpha Phi Omega. John graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, and he went on to have an outstanding career in business. In recognition of his achievements, he received the WIU Alumni Achievement Award in 2017.
“Joann and I met when she came to Western as a freshman,” said John. “We were together for almost 60 years and wonderfully married for 58 years. Our beautiful life experiences emanated from the beginning.”
Joann cherished her family and the many great times she had with them. She had great pride in their son John Elliott, Jr. and even more joy when John Jr. married Sophy Anthony. Their marriage produced three outstanding grandsons, Grant, Clark and Jack. Joann cherished her role as a mother and a grandmother, and together, John and Joann shared a lifetime of laughter, joy and pride in their family.
“John and Joann have been outstanding supporters of Western Illinois University,” said Brad Bainter, executive officer of the WIU Foundation. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my opportunity to become friends with them, and their dedication to each other, their family, their beliefs and to Western Illinois University are examples for everyone to follow. This scholarship will be an outstanding legacy at Western for both Joann and John.”
