The third floor apartment fire in Galesburg today is under investigation, but no injuries were reported. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 149 East Main Street around 10:07 AM today. The structure contained two businesses on the first floor and residential apartments on the second and third floors. All three fire stations responded and found smoke and fire from a third story unit on the north and east side of the building. Battalion Chief Farrell established command while the Central station crew used the aerial ladder to spray water to the third floor, and the Brooks Street crew made entry to the building with a fire hose to finish extinguishing the fire.

Prior to Fire Department arrival, a citizen saw the fire and assisted a resident out of the building from the second floor.  The Fremont Street crew searched the building and rescued tie cats, which they turned over to animal control.  There were no injuries of Fire personnel or residents reported.

Off-duty fire personnel were called in to provide emergency coverage for the City of Galesburg.  Damages to the structure are estimated to be $160,000.  The fire remains under investigation by the Galesburg Fire Investigators.

Sidewalks around the building on Prairie Street and Main Street are closed due to concerns of structural integrity of the building.  The City of Galesburg asks people to not walk in the closed sidewalks.
