Safety Town is a two-week program that teaches children about safety, both inside the home and outside the home, and is open to children in Bureau County who are 4 or 5-years-old by June 1, 2023. Safety Town is taught by Certified Teacher, Erica Lenihan, and Officer Tyler Wolf, also known as Officer Friendly. Officer Wolf is the School Resource officer for the Princeton Police Department. The program, sponsored by the Princeton Junior Woman’s Club, consists of daily classroom instruction in combination with outdoor safety demonstrations and practice. No Exceptions are made to the age policy. Students will attend Safety Town at Douglas Elementary School, 220 East LaSalle Street, Princeton IL from 9-11 AM, Monday-Friday, June 5-16, 2023.
Parents drop the children off and pick them up each day, and attend an hour-long “graduation” on the last Friday of the program. Graduation day allows parents to see what their kids have learned, and celebrate with goodie bags, graduation certificates and treats for the students. High School aged volunteers help “Officer Friendly” and Mrs. Lenihan run the program. The volunteers pass a background check and earn volunteer hours from the program. High School Students interested in volunteering will earn hours for their school or organization. Volunteer applicants can fill out a volunteer application and submit it to the address on the form, or request an application by emailing [email protected].
Princeton Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC) has put much thought and changes have been made for the health and well-being of the students, volunteers and teachers. To register students and volunteers for Safety Town, the applications are accepted by mail (the mailing address is on the form) with applications postmarked by April 28, 2023, or emailed to [email protected] by April 30, 2023.
