Another Gun Incident in Sterling Leads to Arrest

Sterling Police arrested 18-year-old Leland S. Stephenson following a string of serious charges. Stephenson faces allegations including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm and ammunition without proper credentials.

Additional charges include illegal possession of alcohol and resisting arrest. The incident occurred when officers attempted an identification check, prompting Stephenson to flee before being captured nearby.

During his arrest, officers discovered a handgun on him. Stephenson faces the following charges: Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon (Class 4 Felony), Possession of Firearm without a F.O.I.D. (Class A Misdemeanor), Possession of Ammunition without a F.O.I.D. (Class A Misdemeanor), Illegal Possession of Alcoholic Liquor (Class A Misdemeanor), and Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer (Class A Misdemeanor).Currently, Stephenson is detained at Whiteside County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.

This case is distinct from another recent incident involving a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Sterling High School.

All are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
